Camping out in Japan

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

My first illustration in Japan has just been published – the cover of the annual Auto Camp Guide of Japan. It was a great opportunity for me to work on a new pattern of tents and trees that can be seen in the background. I quite enjoy the commercial quality of the Japanese characters on the cover. Below is one of the crazier sketches that I proposed.

Elephant by Maija Louekari

«Karkuteillä» (meaning «At Large»)  was created by Maija Louekari for Finnish textile company marimekko. I thoroughly enjoyed examining the elephant and then looking again, discovering the zebra wearing black boots! See more of Maija’s designs on her website and check out the new marimekko catalog online.

Holy stripes!

Zebra puzzle

I love zebras. When I started looking at them closely I realized it was a wonder of nature how those stripes flow around the body without getting mixed up and how it is difficult to tell if the animal is black with white stripes or vice versa. I finally got to draw one – this is for the Tigerprint jigsaw puzzle competition which finishes at the end of July. You can see my other entries and those of other illustrators as well. So is the smile a stripe or really a smile?
