Christmas Robins

I found this charming illustration by Andrea Lobban on the Tigerprint blog in their Christmas card competition section. I like the rough lines and the handwriting surrounding the robin. I asked Andrea, who is an illustrator and surface designer in Glasgow Scotland, how is the robin related to Christmas? She replied, «I had taken it for granted that it was a universal Christmas symbol until you pointed it out! The first postmen in the UK wore red uniforms and were known as robins.» Also the robin appeared delivering envelopes on the first British Christmas cards in the 1860’s. The robin is a bird seen often in winter the UK whereas here in Canada it is a different species alogether and is related to spring. Thanks Andrea! Her website is not up yet but when it is I’ll let you know.
