Mère Michel has found herself in the annual exhibition of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, Illustration West 55, as one of the best illustrations of the year in the Children’s Market category. This the second illustration from the French nursery rhyme book “Mes jolies comptines” to be awarded this year! I am particularly pleased as this illustration represents a departure from the usual art that is associated with this classic nursery rhyme of a grandmother who is looking for her cat. Here, Mère Michel is sad that one of her cats is gone (which one?) and we can see that she has had others (are they lost, too?). All the cats are named after famous artists whose names begin with an M, such as Matisse and Mondrian. It was great fun imagining how these artists would paint a portrait of a cat. The exhibition will be held at the Society’s Gallery at 5119 Eagle Rock Blvd., Los Angeles, starting on January 6th, 2017.
